Whales and Wine in Hermanus Featured

On a bright beautiful sunny day last week, the CTRU leisure team and Johannesburg media were treated to the sight of a whale out of season  right next to shore in Hermanus! When we were greeted by the town’s resident whale-crier (the only one in the world might I add) we really weren’t expecting to spot one since whale season is from June to November.hermanus1

Apart from the appearance of the visiting Brydes Whale, we were most gobsmacked by the fact that it appeared mere metres from our lunch table. Bientang’s Cave Restaurant in Hermanus is in a phenomenal location. Our table was literally on the rocks right next to the ocean and we could hop over rock pools to get closer to seals sunning themselves or dip our feet in the water if we’d wanted to. Combine the view of the surrounding mountains with an out-of-this-world seafood menu and it’s was a pretty fantastic place to be spending the afternoon.hermanus2

After a home-made snoek pate starter with salad and seed bread, huge hot platters laden with calamari, prawns, mussels and freshly grilled fish were served to each person. If that wasn’t enough, the sauvignon blanc and chardonnay that was paired with each course was simply heavenly.hermanus3

As stuffed as we were, we managed to roll ourselves to our vehicle to head to La Vierge Wines for a wine tasting before making our way back to Cape Town. La Vierge means ‘The Virgin’ and they punt themselves as “Wines of Desire”. Quite honestly, I would visit the wine estate again simply for the view, which, by the way, you don’t have to lose sight of even if you visit the loo. In fact, I thought I was eavesdropping on two women who’d had a bit too much tipple when I heard them chatting in the bathroom about whether or not one of them could see the crocodile in the vineyard. I think they noticed my dubious expression because they took it upon themselves to point him out and – lo and behold! – there really is a croc in the vineyard! He’s got his own pool surrounded by bushes but I’m really not sure how they contain him there! Not only is the view great, but the wines have brilliant names, like Original Sin, Jezebelle and Nymphomane. You can’t tell me you don’t want a taste…
